The Five Elements

Normal birth can be assisted by natures' five elements working together to stimulate the natural production of hormones during labour and birth, from helping to reduce pain in labour and ultimately help the important bonding process begin between mother and new baby.

Fire

Soft and warm lighting can transform any hospital labour room from being cold and sterile into a cosy, safe space. A home-like atmosphere is desirable for a woman ready to give birth normally, .so that she can feel unobserved.

Earth

A natural upright, kneeling or squatting position during labour can relieve pain, help labour to progress and normal birth occur due to natural gravity.

Air

Breathing regularly throughout labour draws the element of air into the body creating a rhythm of deep breathing which is calming and also naturally pain-relieving. The technique is widely practised in many ante-natal classes.

Water

Water is a very useful element during labour and birth A labouring woman can feel less pain whilst being supported by water in a birthing pool. Looking and focusing upon a natural source (a river or the sea) may also be relaxing.

Being

The constant presence and support throughout labour provided by a birth doula can reduce the need for pain relief, give the woman or couple confidence to achieve normal birth, and help to protect their memory of the experience.

Of course, your labour and birth of your baby will be your own personal journey, however and whichever way you travel.
