What is a birth doula?

A birth doula is a woman, experienced in childbirth herself who offers unconditional emotional and physical support to women in late pregnancy, throughout birth and for a short time afterwards. A birth doula does not perform clinical tasks and she is not to be employed instead of a midwife or other health professional.
